Have you ever wondered why parents choose to take their children to chiropractors?
The Journal of Neuroscience’ published ‘birth - two years is a critical period of brain development and any disruption from injury can have long-lasting or permanent effects in the striation and function of the brain’. The first trauma your child will experience is the birthing process, the second major trauma will be when they start walking on their own. Many factors can cause birth trauma such as false labor, long or very short labor, failure of the mother’s cervix to dilate, distress from journey through the birth canal, the use of drugs to increase contraction, vacuum extraction, or forceps, c-section delivery, cord around the baby’s neck, incorrect positioning in the uterus or birth canal, and other issues. When trauma occurs, muscles surrounding the spine protectively contract. This includes muscles that directly attach to the nerve's protective covering, which can effect biomechanics.
Birth trauma is one of the major issues that effect breastfeeding as well. Dr. Vallone produced a study in the magazine JCCP, completed on 25 infants with breastfeeding issues who received chiropractic care. The results showed 80% of the babies had improvements of feeding with adjustments, and soft tissue therapy. The Canadian Medical Association Journal stated "the mode of delivery and lack of breastfeeding disrupt “gut balance” which has been linked to an increasing number of disease such as inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer allergy and asthma". The top three reason most parents seek care for their children are:
1. To promote proper growth and development, including problems with breastfeeding
2. To allow a child’s nervous system and spine to grow without interference
3. To improve immune system and digestive health
Problems ignored during a child’s younger years will have an effect on them later in life. Be proactive about your child’s health and bring them in for a spinal check up today!
